The process starts with cleaning the harvested barley and separating the grain from other foreign elements like soil, grass, dust, and stones. Cleaning is followed by conditioning which involves drying or dampening the grain to retain 15% moisture.
After cleaning and conditioning, the grains are sent for bleaching with steam and sulfur dioxide. After 12-24 hours of resting, the bleached barley is sent for blocking and peeling or hulling, where they are separated from the outer kernels leading to the formation of pearl barley, followed by polishing and flaking.
