  • India aims to capture 10% of the projected global green hydrogen demand by 2030 to become a leading producer and export hub.
  • This goal, driven by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, requires overcoming challenges like cost and storage while leveraging private sector investment.
  • The strategy focuses on developing financing, certification, and pilot projects in key sectors like steel and transport to ensure safety and market growth.

India has set an ambitious goal to secure ten percent of the worldwide demand for green hydrogen, which is projected to surpass 100 million metric tonnes by the year 2030. This statement was made by the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, who expressed the country's aspiration to become a leading producer and a global export hub for green hydrogen. He emphasized that achieving this vision would require ongoing innovation to enhance certification and trading mechanisms, guarantee offtake certainty, and facilitate access to green finance through tools such as viability gap funding, green bonds, and support from multilateral banks.

The minister highlighted that green hydrogen, which is produced by using renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, is central to these efforts. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, established in 2023, aims to position India as a global center for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. It was noted that technological advancements in solar photovoltaics, offshore wind, and electrolyzer efficiency are already driving down production costs, which are expected to decrease further.

However, the minister also pointed out that critical challenges such as integration, storage solutions, land availability, and cost competitiveness remain important areas of focus. He expressed confidence that these obstacles are solvable. The private sector was acknowledged for playing a pioneering role, with Indian companies developing gigascale projects, manufacturing electrolyzers, and launching pilot projects for hydrogen mobility, blending, and refuelling infrastructure.

The government has initiated pilot projects to explore the direct use of green hydrogen in key sectors such as steel, transport, and shipping. So far, twenty-three projects have been approved under research and development initiatives, with over one hundred additional proposals being considered for centers of excellence. Furthermore, three projects have been approved for establishing green hydrogen testing facilities, and more than one hundred standards and protocols related to green hydrogen have been either adopted or are currently in development to ensure safety and quality.
